Quick Start

Note: The following diagram shows a normal setup in a theater.

Diagram of the data path, showing a VTR or TV receiver video source connected to the data-recovery decoder, which is connected via a serial port to the PC running caption keeper, which is connected via ethernet to a Real server, which is connected to a Real player.
  1. Connect your data-recovery decoder to a captioned video source and to a serial port on the computer.
  2. Make sure the data-recovery decoder is set to recover CC1 (captions on field 1)
  3. Connect your Rear Window display to another serial port on the computer.
  4. Start up MoPix-21.

Note: The first time you run MoPix-21, it defaults to COM1: for input and COM2: for output. If those are not the correct ones or unavailable, you'll be notified and/or you can close ports and set them up appropriately.

    The main caption keeper window.
  5. The main window simply provides visual feedback of the inbound raw data. When you start MoPix-21, it automatically opens the serial ports and begins "listening" for captions.

  6. Line-21 input window.
  7. In the Line-21 Decoder window, set the serial port to match the connected data-recovery decoder (if it doesn't already). If you have an EEG DE-241-DR connected to COM1:, the factory default settings should be "1:1200,o,7,1" to reflect:
    • COM1:, 1200 baud, odd parity, 7 data bits, 1 stop bit
  8. If you need to change the hardware setup, make sure the port is closed with the Open/Close button. Then click the Setup button and set Comm port, baud rate, parity, data bits, and stop bits to match your data source.

  9. In the Rear Window Display window, you'll see captions displaying there which correspond to the captions flowing into the Line-21 Decoder windows.

  10. Congratulations, you're displaying captions from the video source on your Rear Window Caption display. You can view the captions using a Rear Window Caption reflector.
