NCAM Publishes New Digital Book, Creating Accessible iBooks Textbooks with iBooks Author

NCAM has published free guidelines for authors who want to use Apple's iBooks Author to create accessible iBooks textbooks. This new, accessible digital book provides detailed information on all the steps necessary to assemble and publish accessible Multi-Touch materials, from the use of source documents through testing with VoiceOver, the screen reader that comes with iOS and OS X operating systems. Topics include:

  • an overview of accessibility and electronic publications
  • the role of structure in source documents
  • how to add descriptions to images, charts and shapes
  • adding accessibility features to iBooks widgets, such as image galleries, media clips, mathematical expressions, review questions and more
  • testing your iBooks textbook with VoiceOver on iPad
While the primary aim of this digital book is to teach you how to take advantage of all that iBooks Author has to offer in terms of accessibility support, it also serves as a showcase for these features. With demonstrations of accessible images, media, review questions, interactive images, structure and math, you'll be able to see, hear and test an accessible iBooks textbook yourself.

Creating Accessible iBooks Textbooks with iBooks Author is available for free from the iBookstore on iPad.
