Real Time Captioned News - See Errors?

Viewers who watch TV news with closed captions were invited participate in an anonymous online survey to share their opinions about caption errors. The survey was open for two weeks in the spring of 2010.

The WGBH - Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) conducted this survey as part of the Caption Accuracy Metrics project, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The CC Metrics project is exploring automated methods to assess closed caption quality on live news programming.

This survey was designed to collect information from television news caption viewers about the impact of errors that appear in live closed captioning (for example, mistakes, word deletions or substitutions). We will use the information provided to better understand the types of caption errors that make the dialogue in a live television news program hard to follow. We will post survey results at the CC Metrics Web site shortly.
