Describing Images for Enhanced Assessments
Example Choice Tree
How to describe this image:
In the past, a student may have encountered a description such as this.Answer Choice A. Tree Diagram B. There are two drink choices, tea and coffee, each of which are connected by green lines to two dessert choices. The first drink choice is tea. The dessert options for tea are pie and cake. The second drink choice is coffee. The dessert options for coffee are pie and cake.
Although this is a complete and understandable description, it is not efficient. It is better to convert the answer choices lists as shown below. This is not only more efficient but mimics the construction of the choice trees whereas the narrative description (above) is a very different style of presenting the information.
However, this is a good example of a description which is not necessarily easy for the student to use unless they have experience reading and understanding lists and outlines. Therefore, it is vital that students have repeated exposure to this type of description so that they can benefit from it.
