Access to Convergent Media
The electronic program guide (EPG) is an integral component in digital cable set-top boxes and television receivers, and is the key to accessing a wide array of programs and services. Current EPGs are not accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired due to their graphics-rich user interface.
The CPB/WGBH National Center for Accessible Media Access to Convergent Media project and America Online developed a PC-based prototype to demonstrate essential characteristics of an audio-enabled EPG. The goal of this prototype is to present solutions that will allow the cable and broadcast industry to provide blind consumers equivalent access to program guide content that today is exclusively available in visual form. It is important to note that many of the solutions will likely have universal appeal and enhance the EPG user experience for multiple audiences.
